Ring games this is the name given to the live action games, or cash games. You have to buy chips to play with and can later exchange for money. You can buy the chips and sit as soon there is a free spot at the table. If you sit out and leave, the games continue with the remaining players and your seat could be taken. Still, there are some rules, like: You cannot remove any amount of chips from the table. This it is considered “cashing out” and you would have to buy chips again and find a seat; you also cannot put more chips at the table while a hand is in progress.
Poker tournaments this kind of play format has a predetermined structure and ends with only one Winner. The players have to pay a fixed fee as an entry to buy in, and then receive a certain amount of play money chips to use along in the tournament. These cannot be changed for money at the end. If a player loses all his chips, he is out of the tournament unless the format played accepts a re-buy or buy-back. A fixed number of players who hold the maximum amount of chips will move to the next table, with the winners of other tables. The prize awarded at the end of the tournament is decided beforehand and is not determined by the total amount of chips of the winner. Usually, this prize is the total fee of the tournament minus the casino’s costs and profits. These tournaments are also called “open tournaments”.
Invitational tournaments these games, also called “freerolls”, have no entry fee and the winners of the satellite tournaments are invited to play for a sponsored prize. Another type of tournament is the “sit and go”; this is played as soon the table is full and at a single table.
In ring games, the blinds and the ante bets remain constant, but in tournaments these increase as the level of the tournament rises.
