Hand Rankings

Let’s begin with the order of the cards from lowest to highest: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. The Ace can be used as the lowest or the highest card. There is no difference between the suits of the cards so the King of Diamonds is equal in value to the King of Spades.Let’s begin with the order of the cards from lowest to highest: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. You have to get used to the hand rankings to make better decisions at the poker table. In order of increasing value, these are the possible hands: Higher Card, One Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a Kind, Straight Flush and Royal Flush.

Higher cardIf you happen to get dealt no combination of cards, only odd cards, then you have to play with the card of highest value.

One pair Two of your 5 chosen cards share the same numerical value. If two players have the same pair (of equal value) they will have to look at the highest odd card from each hand. If these two also have the same value, you then move to the second highest, until you reach the lowest odd cards. If these, too, are the same, you have a tie.

Two pair This hand has 2 pairs and one other card. If two players have the same highest pairs, even when they compare the second pair, and if these are also equal in value, compare the odd card remaining.

Three of a kind You get dealt 3 cards with the same value and two other cards of different value. If you compare two hands that have an equally ranking Three of a Kind, you will have to look at the odd cards in their hands to break the tie.

Straight This hand has 5 cards in sequential order, but they do not share the same suit. In the lowest straight the top card is 5 and in the highest the Ace card is the top.

Flush This hand is made of 5 cards of the same suit of any value, in non-sequential order. To break ties between two flushes, you have to look card for card, from the highest to the lowest. For example, a K-J-7-5-3 beats a K-J-7-3-2.

Full House This refers to a poker hand with a Three of a Kind and One Pair. If the Three of a Kind is tied, the pair must break the tie.

Four of a kind These are 4 cards of the same value, plus an odd card.

Straight Flush This hand is like a Straight, but all the cards are of the same suit.

Royal Flush This is exactly like a Straight Flush, but with the highest cards in the game: A-K-Q-J-10.
